Shane Carwin Gets Shot At Brock Lesnar At UFC 116 On July 3

Shane Carwin is finally getting the fight he has been waiting for. After previously being scheduled to fight Brock Lesnar back in November of 2009, Carwin has been lined get his shot this summer.

Carwin had to wait due an illness that had stricken Lesnar, but the wait turned out to be beneficial for him. The Colorado fighter got a shot at Frank Mir, decimating the former champion which has now cleared the way for a fight with Lesnar.

“I think everything works out for a reason,” Carwin told MMAWeekly Radio. “That’s probably the reason right there. Getting that win over Frank, that’s two of Brock’s five fights. So being able to fight Frank, and get to Brock for that just put me into the title contention.

“One thing that hurt me was sitting out. I was supposed to fight Cain (Velasquez) and they moved that, then they bumped me to Brock, obviously people had questions about that. In the mean time I’ve been sitting out waiting to fight Brock or Cain, and all these other guys were fighting and still winning. So that makes their records and them look like a better contender, so I think at this point it was best that I fought Frank.”

Lesnar is noted for his trash talking, but Carwin, who is 12-0 with 7 KO’s and 5 submissions, wants nothing to do with it.  Lesnar (4-1) was brought into the ring after Carwin defeated Mir and tried to draw Carwin in with WWE style trash talk, however the attempt was unsuccessful. Carwin simply conceded to Lesnar’s ego knowing he would get the opportunity to shut Lesnar up in the octagon.

“That’s one thing that he does well and I think he obviously studied that part of the game for a while when he was doing the WWE stuff, so it probably comes natural to him, but like I said that stuff I actually find pretty amusing,” said Carwin. “If they come out and they rip on me, or comment, I’ll actually have a laugh about it. That kind of stuff doesn’t affect me. I want to be remembered as the type of fighter for my fights in the Octagon, not for all the talk outside of it.”

The months leading up to this fight could be very interesting.  Words are sure be tossed around by Lesnar as the fight nears, but will he be able to back up all of his talk? Lesnar has been impressive since losing his first fight, and Carwin will surely have his work cut out for him if he wants to claim Lesnar’s championship.

MMA fans will surely be looking forward to this fight on July 3rd, at UFC 116.

Currently, Lesnar is the odds on favorite to win. According to MMA Lines at Bodog Sportsbook, Lesnar is -200, or 1 to 2, to win the match against Carwin. As for Carwin’s odds, they’re at +160, or 8 to 5.
