Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin Postponed... Again

The much anticipated Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin January 2nd UFC match has been postponed for a second time, it was announced Wednesday.

UFC President Dana White told Yahoo.com that the fight- originally scheduled for November 21, has been reschedule again- as Lesnar has been diagnosed with mononucleosis. Because of the illness, Lesnar will be unable to train for anywhere from a month to six weeks, making the first January 2 a near impossibility.

Mononucleosis- or more commonly referred to as “mono,”- is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (a type of herpes virus) that effects the lymph nodes, salivary glands, throat, liver, spleen and blood.

It is transmitted through saliva, either by kissing or sharing objects, such as straws, utensils and toothbrushes with those infected. It causes extreme fatigue and is usually accompanied by weight loss. White did not say how Lesnar was infected with the virus.

The fight, one of the most highly anticipated of the New Year, featured Lesnar (4-1) against the undefeated Carwin (11-0). Lesnar first won his UFC Championship belt in November of 2008, by beating Randy Couture and later unified the belt this summer after defeating Frank Mir.

White did not confirm with Yahoo if the fight will be rescheduled, or if Carwin will take on another opponent January 2.

Lesnar health update

It has been confirmed that Brock Lesnar is suffering from mononucleosis.  He informed Dana White earlier today of the diagnosis that he received this week.  He was ordered not to do any training for at least one month and the Jan. 2 date is out of the question.

White told Kevin Iole earlier today, "We're still trying to figure it out and I'm really not sure where any of it stands right now."

No date has been set for Lesnar vs. Carwin, if that is the direction the company goes.  Lesnar would probably be available to fight again in early March according to those close to him.
